Hens & Chicks are a low growing succulent perennial that looks almost like a rubbery rose. The Commander Hay exhibits a sharp, purple red leaf with bright green tips. The mother rosette(Hen) in the center will spread offsets(Chicks) in all directions and later on grown roots of their own to become an individual plant themselves. During the summertime, a thick flowering stalk will rise from the center of the hen rosette and bear a greenish/red flower.
